L.A. Rooted Partners with Bicicocina

Los Angeles Rooted is a grassroots organization which cultivates youth leadership and empowerment through their youth programming throughout the year. LA Rooted reached out The Bicycle Kitchen in anticipation of their first ever Gratitude Youth Bike Tour in order to teach the participants basic bike maintenance and preparedness to ride. Rio brought several youth to the space to work with our Cooks Claude, Ds and Jim and while they were there they made a couple of videos about their experience at Bicicocina.

Good luck to all the riders and we hope to see you in the space again very soon!

CicLAvia Numero Diez

The Bicycle Kitchen/La Bicicocina just wrapped another CicLAvia, this time back in the "Heart of LA" through the eastern areas of the city. We were at 5 Puntos hub, an area rich in history and culture but new to many Angelenos riding the route. We met amazing cyclists out enjoying the beautiful, albeit hot, day. Kitchen volunteers fixed a lot of flats and made a lot of people happy. We were pleased to introduce the Kitchen and our mission to new clientele.

We definitely look forward Numero Once in December 2014!

Bicycle Kitchen + Bresee Foundation

The Bresee Foundation is a youth center in Los Angeles that provides after-school programs and services that aid young people in finding their full potential. It goes without saying that bicycles fit into their mission by teaching basic mechanical skills, self-sufficiency, and help create a healthy lifestyle. It is the Kitchen's pleasure to work with Bresee in a program to teach a group of youth to fix up donated bikes to own and ride after several months of Fridays.

Kitchen Cook, Jose Molina, spearheaded this project and worked with a group of Bresee youth called the Friday Bike Club. They were all happy to repair and ride bikes they can call their own. Just in time for their summer biking trip!

Stay tuned for announcements about art on the building, and some fun bicycle events in LA!! We also had our board elections, and importantly... amazing cold brew and PIZZZZZAAAAAA.

THANK YOU PATAGONIA!

The totals are in. The Santa Monica Patagonia employees rode 367 miles during Bike to Work Week. Sean rode everyday from Highland Park!  A big thanks to Patagonia for making us part of their Bike to Work Week Challenge. --great people and a great clothing brand!

Patagonia will pay us $1 per mile + $250, which comes out to $617 for us, and that much more clean air for the rest of LA

BK / BiciCocina SQUARE dance!

Hi Folks,

Come on down to the Square Dance tonight!  Bear witness to how bicycles truly bring people together.
There is going to be some serious talent in the house playing old-time music, calling dances and sharing baked and brewed goods.  (Suggested donation $10.  Donate what you can ; we won't turn you away for lack of funds)

We even got our hands on a DVD of Tilda Swinton riding her bicycle along the Berlin Wall for an hour in 1988 (before it fell) and again in 2009.  We are going to project it at the square dance.  AWESOME!

Scroll down for Square Dance details.

Peace.

Only Three Days Remain....

A view from inside the new space.

Behind that window lies a space twice as large as where we are now. Outside there's a small parking lot enclosed by a wrought iron fence and an electric sign on a post. Pretty simple. For now.

It's where we're planning to move later this spring and it's headed for a transformation. Hopefully.

We'll receive it empty, stainless, and quiet. We want to fill it with people, bikes, parts, tools, noise, creativity, and community. We want to create the bicycle co-op of our dreams - and we will. Hopefully.

We're so close to reaching our goal of raising enough money for the down payment. We're full of gratitude and excitement. We know we can do this.

Hopefully you you'll join us.

5 DAYS LEFT!!!

Look at that meter rise!

Wow, in the last 2.5 weeks we've raised $11,145 and we are FEELING the LOVE. There is so much excitement and support from throughout the community, we really feel like we're on the right track. A big thank you to everyone who has contributed.

Cooks explain it all in under 45 seconds.

We've come so far already but there's more work to be done. If you haven't donated already, consider making today the day. We're aiming for $30, 000 by the end of the week. If you believe in our mission and in the power of people coming together to make a difference, then donate now!
