Bicycle Kidtchen

Jamil is three.

Jamil, his mom, Amira learn how to fix a flat.

From Rory, who holds down Mondays and worked with Jamil:

Amira and her son Jamil (three years old) stopped by on a Monday afternoon to repair a flat tire. Visiting from Berkeley, CA, Jamil was enjoying the sunny LA weather on his bicycle until he ran over a nail. At the kitchen, Jamil was eager to learn about bicycle repair and wanted to do everything by himself! By the time he left, he knew how to remove his wheel, patch a tube, and put it all back together again.

Quarterly Cooks Meeting::Yeah!

March Quarterly Cooks Meeting right after our tasty lunch.

Did you know that the Bicycle Kitchen is an all-volunteer run endeavor? Our volunteers are called Cooks cuz they cook up bikes and they make all the decisions about what happens on a daily basis. Our Board of Directors is made up of Cooks and they meet monthly. We also have Quarterly Cooks Meetings where we close up shop on a Sunday and ride somewhere and meet from like noon to 4pm. Not only do we make decisions about stuff, this is where we vote in Shadows to become Cooks! This means they've "shadowed" ten shifts, had fun with the Shadow workbook and attended an orientation and have decided they like us enough to stick around.

We just had our meeting this past Sunday.

A big hearty welcome to new Cooks, Maribeth, Nick and Kris! On that welcome tip, at our December Cooks meeting we welcomed Matthew, Bobby and Alessandro.

Scores for the City::

Winter 2011, Guide 2 of the Llano Del Rio Guide can be picked up at the Bicycle Kitchen among other places. It's a lusciously designed pocket poster of poetry, puppets and potions about our fair city. It smells good, too!

One of our Cooks, Jonah Schwartz, wrote a beautiful piece about riding in Crank Mobs called "A View of the City from the Cycle Seat."

Guide 1 was Map for An Other LA.

About Llano Del Rio Collective:
The Llano Del Rio Collective aims to expand cultural, social, and political imagination of Los Angeles through the production of thematic guides, related events and the hosting of a speakers bureau. We aim to frame practices, rather then be a practice.

The project draws its name from the socialist colony founded in California’s Antelope Valley by Job Harriman in the early Twentieth Century.

Though not strictly a collective we negotiate collectivist ideals with an advisory group currently constituted by Katie Bachler, Sandra de la Loza, John Burtle, Adam Overton, Hector Gallegos, Ashley Hunt, Tom McKenzie, Ken Ehrlich, Kelly Marie Martin, Steve Anderson, Janet Sarbanes, Fritz Haeg, Kimberly Varella, Ava Bromberg, Nicole Antebi, Lara Bank, Jen Hofer, and Colin Dickey. The Llano Del Rio Collective is organized by Robby Herbst.
